"IP" stands for Ingress Protection, a standardized rating system defined by the International Electrotechnical Commission under IEC 60529. Every full IP rating has exactly two digits, and each digit tests a completely separate thing:

  • First digit (0–6): protection against solid particles, primarily dust. A rating of 6 means the device is fully dust-tight — no dust enters under any tested condition.
  • Second digit (0–9): protection against liquid ingress. Higher numbers mean deeper, longer, or more forceful water exposure survived.

Because the two digits test unrelated hazards, a speaker can score well on one and poorly (or not at all) on the other — which is exactly what the "X" placeholder is for.

What the "X" actually means (and why it's not a red flag)

A rating like IPX7 means the manufacturer tested and published only the water-resistance digit; the dust digit wasn't tested or wasn't disclosed. That's not automatically a sign of a weaker product — many speakers are legitimately tested for water resistance only, because that's the hazard their intended use (poolside, beach, kitchen) actually presents. It does mean you shouldn't assume dust protection from an IPX-rated product; if fine sand or grit exposure is a real concern for how you'll use it, look specifically for a full two-digit rating with a "6" in the first position instead.

Always check the specific manufacturer's published depth and duration for an IP68 product rather than assuming it matches a competitor's.

You can watch this rating system tighten in real time by following a single popular speaker line's generations: the JBL Flip 5 launched rated IPX7 (water resistance only); the Flip 6 moved to a full IP67 rating (adding certified dust-tightness); the Flip 7 moved further to IP68. That progression reflects a broader industry trend — manufacturers increasingly test and certify the dust digit as well, recognizing how often portable speakers actually end up at beaches and campsites where sand and grit are as real a hazard as water.

The fine print every rating shares

Regardless of which specific rating a speaker carries, a few limitations apply across the entire IP system that are easy to miss:

  • All standard IP water testing uses fresh, still water. Saltwater and chlorinated pool water are more corrosive to seals and metal components over time; a device rated for fresh-water submersion isn't certified against ocean or pool exposure, even though it will usually survive briefly. Rinsing with fresh water after saltwater or pool use is the standard mitigation.

  • IP ratings test physical ingress, not device function underwater. A submersion-rated speaker surviving a dunk doesn't mean Bluetooth connectivity works underwater — radio signals don't propagate well through water regardless of the housing's water-tightness.

  2. Look for a full two-digit rating (like IP67) specifically if sand or dust exposure is realistic for how you'll use it — an IPX-only rating tells you nothing about dust resistance either way.
  3. For IP68 products, check the manufacturer's specific depth/duration claim rather than assuming a standardized figure, since IP68 itself doesn't fix one.
  4. Rinse with fresh water after saltwater or pool exposure, regardless of rating, since standard IP testing doesn't certify against those specific liquids.
